Character Analysis of Edna Pontellier Edna Pontellier was a very respectable woman from the 1800s that was unsatisfied with her situation in life. Mrs. Pontellier was a mother of two sons and had a husband whom she adored at the beginning of their marriage, but overtime they have became distant and her sexual desires were no longer being fulfilled. She soon broke the role society had casted upon her and became rebellious by leaving her womanly duties behind. Kate Chopin reveals Edna Pontelliers character through the her actions, through dialogue, and by telling the reader the thoughts and feelings that are circulation through Mrs. Pontellier. Throughout history women have been victims of many stereotypes. The stereotypes that will be analyzed in this essay are the ideas that women are somehow inferior to men, the weaker sex, both mentally and physically; they are self-sacrificing mothers and wives and that they are dependent on men. This is seen in the play Medea, set in Greece during a time that was dominated by men. Women could only, under exceptional conditions, obtain a divorce yet any Greek man could rid himself of a wife simply by publicly renouncing his marriage. The ideal woman was spoken of as little as possible among men, whether for good or for ill[1]. Hedda Gabler is set in Norway during a period of many changes. Too often, individuals pass off thatresponsibility with the hope that others will pick up the slack. The problem isthat too many shrug their responsibility leaving an insurmountable degree ofperils. It is everyones obligation to help solve the problems because everyone has astake in society. Not enough people see the whole picture when it comes tosocietys problems. If something hurts the society, it hurts the individual. Forexample, the problem of homelessness is not just the problem of those who arewithout residence. Their plight effects us all. Homelessness hurts the localbusinessman whose customers are frightened away by the homeless man living onthe corner. It hurts those who have to commute to work via public transportationand must deal with the panhandlers. It hurts those whose homes are burglarizedby the homeless man looking for money to feed his family. There is no isolatedproblem in society and each problem has a ripple effect that eventually hurtseveryone. Even if only for selfish reasons, every individual should help tosolve the problems of society. A parallel that I can draw to further illustratemy point is the team play of former NBA star Earvin Magic Johnson. When askedwhy he is such a team player, he responded that he was a very selfish man. Hewanted to win so much that he was willing to do whatever it took to succeed. I hope that in my later life I have every opportunity to help those who need it. I try to help out as much as I can now. Due to my commitments at school, I havelittle spare time, but I still attempt to help. During Thanksgiving I help outwith my schools Thanksgiving Food Drive. I also volunteer as a tutor for thosewho need help with their academics. On smaller scales, I always donate my loosechange to the various charity boxes that are strategically placed at thecounters of all the local stores and I always recycle my recyclables. At college,I look forward to the opportunity to further assist in improving society. Beyond college, I hope to eventually make a real difference in society. I havechosen business management and/or marketing as my career of choice, but I wouldeventually like to throw my hat into the ring of politics. My goal is to becomea successful businessman and set myself up comfortably. If I become well off,which I hope to, I will give back to the society that helped me reach that point. I will do so by donating both my time and money to various charitable services. I then hope to run for local office. My desire to be a politician is for onlyaltruistic reasons. I want to change many things about the way our government isrun and the way it handles the problems of society. If I run for office, it willnot be to gain financially or to make a name for myself. Aung San Suu Kyi was elected in a democratic process once already but the military leadership declared that they were not going to give up their power, after which San Suu Kyi was placed again either in phases of house arrest or would be allowed to leave the country but upon doing so, not allowed back in. She continued to fight alongside her party and to raise international awareness about the seriousness of the human rights abuses. She went on a hunger strike while under house arrest which garnered a great deal of media attention. As of 2015, Burma had open and free elections yet again, and this time Aung San Suu Kyi’s party was elected yet again. The military has stated that it will not contest the results and that it plans to allow the party to assume its role as the new leader. If this takes place, the new party is allowed the authority not only to elect the leader of the country, but other cabinet members. As of late, the former military power changed the constitution to prohibit San Suu Kyi from attaining the role of president, which is a rule that can be overturned if the military leadership keeps to its word and allows the party and San Suu Kyi to assume the power they have been given by their people through the 2015 elections. Opponents of Caprivi now reinforced Wilhelm11 own doubts about his chancellor?s suitability for office and Wilhelm11 pressed Caprivi to draw up an anti-socialist subversion bill. The chancellor refused and this led to an extraordinary plan by Wilhelm11 and his supporter Eulenburg. Their plan was to set aside the powers of the Reichstag, crush socialism and establish a more authoritarian system centred on the Kaiser himself. This was the final straw for caprivi. He successfully talked the Kaiser out of such a course of act ion, but he had lost the will to carry on. In October 1894 caprivi resigned and gladly retired from the political scene. Caprivi?s four years as chancellor neatly illustrate the difficulties of trying to cope with the pressures of the various political forces in imperial Germany. In his attempt to create a genuine base of parliamentary support for the government, Caprivi showed his understanding of the need, in a modern industrial society, for a political approach that recognised the concerns and aspirations of the mass of the population.
